Living in the confines of a sailboat requires good minimalist habits.  Even if you’re not ready to chuck it all and head off to sea, there are benefits of cleaning your environment and simplifying your life that people living on land can adopt to make life more fulfilling.

It will change your life for the better in so many ways.  An on-going journey of opening yourself up to a new way of thriving.  You will find, in the beginning, using a weekly cadence will be most effective in testing a variety of ideas and see which ones resonate best for you.

So many of my friends on land complain about chaos in their lives,  drowning in stuff and an overall sense of dis-ease.  By simplifying your life, what you’re truly passionate about works its way to the surface.

Decluttering your spaces.

Create a plan of attack.  When we were down-sizing, I had 3 boxes.  What absolutely had to stay.  What I liked a lot but rarely used.  Things that didn’t need to be in my space from the start.  Working room-by-room, I went through every single item, assigning it to one of the 3 boxes.

The things that I really needed to keeps was stored in some empty cabinets. The box that held the things I loved, but never used was, over time allotted, given to beloved friends that I knew would cherish the items. The box that held the unneeded things went to donation stations once each week.

I had a specified timeline, and I stuck to it.  If something was causing me a lot of emotional stress, I spent some time with it.  I used it for the last few times, remembering the memories attached to it and then gave it away.  The drop offs to the donation station happened come wind rain or sleet.  Every week, never missing a beat.

I saw a lot of benefit straightaway.  As each room was cleared down to only what I had to keep, it was more enjoyable being in that space.  It also felt like something was being lifted off my shoulders.  I hadn’t expected that.  I also loved the joy of sharing my beloved items with people that I loved.  Hearing them tell me how they would enjoy it.  I found that the things I kept had greater value and I was able to enjoy them more.

Decluttering your mind.

The symptoms: brain filled with non-essential distractions, unrest caused by constant stressors, never having a moments peace.  People tell me there is no time in their lives to make all these changes.  I usually respond back silently, girlfriend, that is no way to live.

By providing yourself a balance of reduced distractions and increased self care you increase quality of sleep and improve your health and life.

I spent one week reducing my unnecessary distractions.  Here is some of the steps I took:
-Turned off most notifications on my phone.  My loved ones know how to get hold of me in case of an emergency.  Everything else from social media notifications, emails on the phone and unscheduled phone calls are off.

-I have specific times when I turn my phone on and make or return calls.  I have a specific time to check emails and respond.

-Made a list of everything I was procrastinating on and spend 2 days only working on them.  Once they were done, they were done.  That felt so good.

-Created a once-a-month ritual of deleting.  Everything from old unused files to photos or screenshots and emails I don’t need.

-Habit of working every day to notice and replace negative thoughts with more graceful ones.
A shaman friend told me recently that we mostly have the same thoughts every single day.  Day in and day out, they are usually always the same.  He suggested that I begin the habit of choosing what healthy thoughts I would like to have and spend a moment having that thought each day.  It’s been quite helpful in stopping ruminating.

Decluttering your relationships.

Love yourself first.  This is the best starting point.  Your relationship with yourself is paramount.  You’ll be with yourself every moment of every day right up until you leave this earth.  Learn how to be compassionate and true to yourself.  Self love is a practice, not a destination.

Set limits and boundaries with anything that is not serving you.  Maintain your energy levels.  Choose who you will engage your energy with.  Know when to give and take.  Understand some will push back on boundaries.  Be compassionate with them.

Take the time to assess the relationships in your life.  Be selective about your inner circle.  Think on each person in your life currently.  While thinking about them, do you feel drained or inspired?  If you feel inspired, grow that relationship with healthy attention.  If someone is draining you, let them go with gratitude, thankful that they fit in your life at one point.  It doesn’t have to be messy and drama-filled.  Just ease away quietly.

Make sure you have the 5 necessary people in your life.  Whether its in your personal life or through social media.  Your cheerleader, your mentor, your coach, your bestie and your peer.  Remember you are the sum of the five people closest to you.

Make sure you have at least one person to stimulate your intellect.  One that you could tell any secret to.  A person that brings out your competitive nature.  One that pushes you to grow.  And one trusted person that will lovingly but honestly tell you how it is.

Be realistic about what you have the power to change. It won’t be everything, so focus your energy and resources on what you can control.  We all want to thrive but should beware of our desires becoming insatiable. It’s the extreme quest for more that leads to discontentment.  Learn the tactful art of saying no.  Be it in love, life or business, lay out your own ground rules upfront so there’s no confusion about what you stand for.

Simple living takes focus, dedication and thoughtfulness.  Remember that minimalism is about eliminating things that you do not need, and valuing what you have in your life at a greater level.
