We are sailors.  We own this amazing Sailboat on Lake Travis in Austin.  It’s our weekend lake house.  We run a sailing club, Sailing Awesome Lake Travis.  We have about 200 members.  Every weekend, we teach people how to sail. We sail with friends. We BBQ on the water. It’s a great life.

My sailboat is called the SV My Salvation. Many people think the name comes from being able to ‘get away from it all’, but we actually named her that because there was no way we were ever going to find the perfect boat.  And there was no way we were ever going to get qualified to buy her.  But the God intervened and answered our prayers.

While we were shopping for sailboats online and not finding anything nice under $25K, we took a break from the unsatisfactory searching and headed out to SV Knot Alot for a relaxing day of sailing.  Upon arriving at the marina and stopping by to use the facilities, we saw a sailboat for sail on Dock A, where all the big beautiful boats were docked.

TheGuy did not want to see her, only to be disappointed that she was way out of our price range.  I argued back that looking isn’t buying and it would help us better understand what other boats are like as we were shopping.  And it would only take a minute, please, please please?

He gave in and we went into the office and asked Steve, the marina manager, to show her to us.  I was terrified, I still remember walking down the Dock A and looking at her beautiful lines as we waited for Steve to unlock the companionway.

We walked inside and I sat, stunned, on the settee.  She was gorgeous.  She looked well out of our price range.  As I sat there, letting her beauty sink in, I noticed that the dining table was removable, it was stowed on the wall to my right.  That left this huge area in the center of the salon for one of my favorite things, a dance floor.  Continuing to sit, I envisioned TheGuy and I slow dancing cheek-to-cheek right there.

Guy caught my eye, my expression must have been crazy, he asked if I was ok.  Yes, I told him.  Come sit with me, just here.  As he snuggled next to me, I relayed my vision.  He could see it too.  We were in a bad place.  And ole Steve knew just how to maneuver around us.

First he had us get up into the V-berth.  See how much headroom there is, and it fits both of you comfortably.  It’s even long enough for your whole body to fit.  We laid there, staring out the large bow port window, getting overwhelmed with FOMO.

Then he showed us the bathroom, or head.  There was a manual flushing toilet that emptied into a grey holding tank.  No more carrying our waste to the marina bathroom, flushing the contents and cleaning out the portable potty we had on Knot Alot.  And there was a cabinet!!  For my girlie toiletries, make-up, parfum, essential oils.  All the things we were carting back and forth every weekend on Knot Alot.  The sliding doors of the cabinet were mirrors, there was a light, and a little cabinet below.  My head was spinning.

Next, Steve walked us through the galley, or kitchen.  There were 5 drawers, a cabinet with plexiglass doors.   The cabinet gave her a modern feel.  There was a huge storage locker, too. A microwave, gimbaled stove, double stainless sinks and counter space. OMG.

Steve told us she was very well priced.  We laughed.  Didn’t matter how great the price was, she wasn’t in our price range.  Steve said he would talk to the owner.  A lot of people that own sailboats are as concerned with who buys them as they are how much they will make.  Steve put in a good word, and the owner dropped the price to $35K.

Guy wanted to know if I thought the bank would approve us for more.  Luckily the boat appraised for $55K, so the bank was comfortable.  We only had to pay the deposit in cash.

Any way, long to short, we got approved and we bought her and it was an amazing memory.  We are so blessed to have her.  Incredible Catalina MKIII, thirty feet of amazing mechanics, our home-away-from-home.  Laughter and lessons are shared here.

We are about to become liveaboards.  Here’s some things to consider if you think you might enjoy living on a sailboat.  There’s a timeline to becoming a liveaboard.  The sooner you get started on it, the sooner you’ll accomplish it.
Know that you know.  Being a liveaboard 24/7/365 is not for everyone. Create a way to investigate it, experience it so you understand what you’re getting into.

It sounds romantic to live on a sailboat. But you have to remember, it’s a working boat.  That means there is a lot of work, daily-weekly-monthly-quarterly, that has to get done…by you, unless you’re fortunate to have the means to pay others to do those tasks.

Create a plan, whether you’ll fast track to one year or realistically take the 3-5 year route.  What you plan you actualize.  Determine if you save up money, win the lotto, or sell everything you own.  Will you live a life of leisure or become a digital nomad?  It can cost less to live on a boat than a fancy house, but only if you plan and research accordingly.
Be graceful with yourself as you work through your plan.  There is a lot to do.  Take it one step at a time, one day at a time.  Make a lot of little decisions every day on what you will rid your life of.  That’s a big step.  Learn seamanship so you don’t end up like that one couple that lost everything 2 hours after they departed.  There will be different skill levels depending on if you will begin at a marina or straightaway take out to sea.

Decide on what type of boat you can afford.  Old or newer.  Are you prepared to take on the timely and expensive refit of a cheaper boat?  Do you have the knowledge or are you willing to learn?  Do you want a monohull or a catamaran?  Can you afford a cat.  They tend to be more expensive to buy and to keep at dock, although they’re quite popular right now, hence the expensiveness.

Where do you want to live on this boat?  If you buy the boat out of state, it’s expensive to get it to where you live now.  You have to factor that in unless you’ll be moving to it.  If you move to it, make sure that location has slips available in marinas that are safe.  Where you will live, what country, what region, what conditions are all very personal.  You need to invest some time to understand what will make you most comfortable.

Take a deep breath and let go.  I was rigid in my plan.  We had to create a plan B.  Be flexible.  Then just go for it and work out the kinks as you go.  If you followed your plan, did your research and all the work needed to be ready, then it will be time.  Step over your fear and make it happen.
